Shepparton Half Ironman 08 PDF Print E-mail

Freaks, PB’s and First Timers make for a great day out in Shep!

Peter Whitmore exiting the swimSunday's half ironman was a great day out for all who made the trip two hours north to Shepparton. We had eight participants in the main event, two in the marshmellow event (I mean hexman) and just as many supporters. Paul and Steve H both smashed over thirty minutes of their previous attempts at the half ironman distance. Steve L didn’t have his best day out after suffering from what may have been a ‘self induced cold’ (he also finished his last uni exam this week, need I say anymore). Tarryn missed her PB by one minute, a great effort considering being right in the middle of a hard training block for Busselton and riding 130km the day before. New member Aaron Conn finished just behind Tarryn in 5:03 after suffering from cramps on the run. Travis Cocks achieved his aim of beating six hours in his first half ironman and Pete was the triathlete getting the greatest value for money (7 hours and thirty minutes worth, Paul certainly got ripped off!) and the biggest cheer of the day!

A day out on the big island! PDF Print E-mail

G'day all,

Well what a crazy week it has been, all ending with a result I was quite happy with at the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii. Arriving in Kona on the Tuesday before the race was very scary. I had tried to run twice in Honolulu in the previous days and had cramped up both times after just five minutes of running, which naturally led to me shitting myself and getting angry - poor Tarryn had to put up with me. The same thing then happened unloading my bike from the taxi and carrying it to the third floor of our hotel. Panick was setting in!

After calming down the next day I rode some sections of the bike course without any problems, making me feel better. Kona is a very intimidating place during Ironman week, everyone looks like they are fit enough to go under nine hours, there are people running and riding all day in the heat and then there are 2,000plus $10,000 dollar bikes and aero helmets kickin' around town. The carbo party was amazing with traditional music and dance and big names everywhere.

Racing - The swim was the roughest most competitive start I’ve ever done. I couldn’t get clear water for about 1500m and severe chaffing had set in (a tip for young players - use 'body glide' in salt water non-wetsuite swims). The swim was slower than expected 1:01 but I think that was the case for all.

Simon Carey competes in the Victorian Schools Cycling Championships PDF Print E-mail

Every year CycleSport Victoria hold the Victorian Schools Cycling Championships, with well over 1200 students taking part.

Numerous riders who have competed in the VSCC have gone on to represent Victoria and Australia at major championships and also attract scholarships from the VIS, or gone on to win prestigious races such as the Austral Wheelrace. Such riders who have competed include Australian representatives Mark French, Sean Finning, Tess Downing and Leigh Howard.

The Eltham Tri Club was proudly represented by Simon Carey who competed in the East Metro Zone Final at Bayswater on Thursday 28th August. Simon was one of 12 Under 19 years Male competitors in a field of exceptionally talented and experienced riders, many much older than himself.

The race was great to watch, with all riders displaying a high level of racing skill and tactics. Simon road a fantastic race, holding his own right to the line where he finished in 6th place. Even though Simon had entered the championships representing his school, CycleSport Victoria and all spectators on the day knew he was a member of the Eltham Triathlon & Open Water Club.

Well done to Simon who rode a well controlled race, and no doubt this years tri results will show us that again!

Beautiful one day - perfect the next!  That's Noosa all over and I love it.  Managed to drag my mates Alan King and Ken Pettie to the sunshine state once again (I can tell you that it didn't take too much convincing) for what was our 4th annual pilgrimage to this fantastic multisport festival.  It was great to see Paul, Dee, Robbo & Kiera at the rego' tent though with the huge number of people and competitors (5,500), that was the last I was to see of them for the weekend (hence the omission of an Eltham Tri club at Noosa pic).  Crikey, there's absolutely nothing not to love about this weekend, being able to get up close and enjoy watching some of the best athletes in the country competing across some very exciting events.  From the footballers celebrity Tri to the Eyeline 1000 ocean swim, the 5km Bolt and the mens and womens Crit's - with all this on the Saturday - Noosa certainly hots well before Sunday's main event.  A water temp of 24.7c on Saturday meant that the tri was be a non-wetsuit race and the weather forecast for a moderate (by Noosa standards) 27c was a blessing for this little Mexican who is much more acclimatised to Melbourne's cool weather racing.

Two crashes, two punctures and 5 podiums PDF Print E-mail

The first race of the club triathlon series was a huge success - with 15 club members participating. A great day and one of the best course in the state down in the Docklands was awaiting the competitors.

While the Gemma and her mum Helen were awaiting the start of their race, Luke and Stevo took off from the start of the run with Cam, Simon and Stephen following closely. Unfortnatly Cam lost his bike in transition and  Stevo punctured at the start of the 2nd lap of the bike. Stevo in the trick of the day managed to borrow an anonymous wheel to continue the race!!!! Chris C. was out pretty quickly when his expectations were shattered by a puncture. Frizzy and Simon tasted the asphalt early in the race but got their act together to get back in the race with few bruises to their egos and their bodies Tongue out. While a little bit further back three club member were battling in a race of their own with Tazz having the upper hand on D'Wayne and Matt (for this time Wink). In the mean time Naish was having a good bike leg trying to limit the damage made during the first run, while Trav was trying to survive his recent "injury"

This race was the start of a long racing campain for Pete toward the IM at the end of the season.

The name of the club was in the mouth of the commentator countless times making us the club with the most exposure on the day.

After an interesting presentation, to say the least,  the club ended up with 5 awards and a nice brunch at a nearby cafe.

1st 15-19 Simon Carey

2nd 20-24 Stephen Lane

2nd 25-29 Tarryn Gooding

2nd 30-34 Cameron Simon

2nd OPEN Luke Whitmore

ATHLETE FUNDRAISER PDF Print E-mail

Sunday September 21, Darebin International Sports Centre 2pm

About thirty Members and Friends turned out to hear Dave MacKenzie and Sue Sharpels speak about their experiences as elite athletes in world class triathlon and cycling.

Sue gave some great advice on assembling sponsorship contributions and generated keen interest from the floor on this point.

Dave's description of the life and dedication needed to win a stage of the Giro d'Italia had us enthralled.  What a great privilege to have the SBS 2008 Tour de France Co-Commentator all to ourselves for the afternoon!

Thanks to Dave and Sue for donating their time to the club.

The afternoon was well catered and prepared with lots of extra interest generated by Door prizes and raffle tickets and a copiously stocked buffet and bar.  Great value for $20 indeed.  Thanks also to Deanne, D'Wayne, Paula, Dan Roberts and Gail Miller for organising such a great event.
